What are Drakkins?
Drakkins are simply crosses between Dragons and different animals (which varies, so they can be nearly anything). They have the physical body of that animal, but have long, leathery wings (unless they're birds or bats, which already have wings), dragon feet complete with sharp claws, and some have tails with razor-shape blades and horns on their heads. Drakkins can speak (both with humans and other animals), and some are intelligent enough to read. They do not have breath weapons, but are physically bigger and stronger than their animal counterparts, and have heightened hearing, smelling, sight, and intelligence.
Where did they come from?
Drakkins were a blessed gift brought unto Kellashar from the Great Golden Dragon, a benevolent being that was born of the sun. The Great Golden Dragon is a major god (like how Glycendia is a major goddess), and is rumored to still be living among the Gryphs. When the Great Golden Dragon sensed that Kellashar was in danger from human destruction, he flew from the sun and landed in Eudaimonia. There he gathered animals of many different types and blessed them with this golden breath. The animals morphed into creatures that resembled dragons but still retained some of their natural features. Thousands of creatures were blessed in this manner, and when the blessing was complete they migrated to different parts of Kellashar. The Drakkins found in a certain environment are most likely to be inhabited by animals of similar stature (for instance, deer and fox Drakkins are found in forests, polar bear and seal Drakkins are found in arctic regions, goat and eagle Drakkins are found on mountains, tropical bird and monkey Drakkins are found in jungles, etc.).
How long do they live?
Age wise, birth to 30 years is toddler, 30-80 years is child, 80-130 is young adult, 130-240 is adult, 240-450 is middle age, 450-650 is old, and beyond 650 is ancient. The eldest drakkin alive today is a reindeer-dragon named Celsia, who is around 500 years old.
Age for a drakkin is also connected to the area they are designated to guard. If an area dies (stripped of either all resources or magic), then the Drakkin, unless it flees, is fated to die alongside it.
What is their purpose?
The Drakkins were created as sort of a double-edged sword against human blight. After the humans were exiled from Eudaimonia, they traveled to different parts of the world. Over time they became destructive to nature, and began pillaging the world of all its natural resources. In return, the animals and plants that originally inhabited these areas became violent, seeking out humans and killing them ruthlessly. In turn again, the humans became more aggressive and destructive towards the environment. The Drakkins were placed as Guardians of the natural world. Their powerful presence deterred humans from entering and scavenging their territories, and at the same time kept the animals from hunting down humans. The Drakkins brought a sort of peace to the natural world…but only temporarily…
Are they still alive today?
Drakkins, sought after for their beauty and rarity (and mystical dragon heritage and magic), soon became the hunted by the humans. The hunting became intense, and many Drakkins were imprisoned and sold either to researchers or to nobles to be pets. Pet drakkins are often stripped of their wings and claws, rendering them to almost harmless and in most cases spirit-less. As a result of this hunting, many of the animals and plants that the Drakkins put at peace became violent again. This time, however, the violence spread beyond humans and targeted the Drakkins themselves. Hence, both humans and animals hunted Drakkins. This put them in double danger, and has reduced their numbers significantly. Also, without the Drakkins, humans once again began to tear down landscapes for their own purposes. When an area that a Drakkin is supposed to guard becomes fully razed, the Drakin slowly dies. Some Drakins stay, abiding by the old code, “The captain must go down with his ship”. To avoid this, several Drakkins flee the area in hopes of finding an Earthen Sanctuary (a place of nature blessed by Forsythia herself and offers a safe haven to any who find one).
